So today Lupe Fiasco comes out and “admits” that Hip Hop Saved My Life was actually based in part of the story of Slim Thug. I didn’t find this surprising but just found that he admitted it interesting. If I was him, I would have just kept it secret, because the song itself has a kind of “diss record” feel to it. And I’m not saying it is a diss record to Slim Thug, because it is not. But in the sense that its narrative which deals with the typical rapper on the come up scenario. It’s like when you say that’s “so typical”, it comes with negative connotation. I still think the song is one of the best songs ever made in hip hop and should have its place in hip hop history.
Another thing Lupe conveniently admitted was that he dedicated the song to Bun B. Now I’m a huge UGK fan, but I thought this was just pandering to rack up cool points and to pay homage to Bun B with the whole Pimp C situation. I would probably do the same thing, but I call it like I see it, deal with it Lupe. Oh and why the hell you putting out a video for that “Toyko, Paris” shit? Anyways…
A new T.I. interview came out today and the whole point of it was just T.I. showing he’s sorry. He kept taking responsibility for his actions saying “I know I brought it on myself” and tried to really play it like the after school special. Personally, I feel like T.I. has let me down. I’ve been such a huge fan of his since the beginning and have said that Urban Legend is the only classic album to come out in the 2000s (though I agree Get Rich or Die Tryin’ is a classic as well -take that Dj Khalid). But I feel like since then T.I. has not only musically let me down, but also as a rap role model with his gun fetish and all. But I’m sure he can make a comeback.
A funny thing from the interview though was the interviewer was saying something like “If you pray so much, how come you don’t have any songs that reflect this?”. Hey dude, have you heard “Praying for help”? One of T.I.’s most realest songs about dealing with prayer and talking to God, when they are the only two things you’ve got in jail or whatever sticky situation you may be in. But that’s all I got to say about that, this is my friday night half drizz rant, by the way, [sidebar: why do you drunk people need to tell other’s their drunk?]. Till tomorrow, oh wait…
