LL Cool J Blames Exit 13 Sales on Def Jam

LL Cool J album sales exit 13
Haha @ coke fest

Where have we seen this movie before? LL Cool J’s last album, Exit 13, hit stores last week and has only since sold 44,000 copies. Yes you read that right. Now Todd is a little mad at his sales considering he thinks he is the God of hip hop and all. Here’s what he said on his myspace blog,

LL Cool J Myspace

What did Todd expect? Platinum first week? I know he posted that he thought he should do 300k in the first seven days. But what work did he do to sell 300k? Did he feature on everybody’s song? Did he put out 10 hot mixtapes? Did he put out more than one single? The first single with Dream is hot, but one hot song and self proclaiming your greatness is not going to sell albums in the year 2008. I think rappers went really delusional after Lil Wayne did his first week numbers, because they all thought “Hey I can magically do a million too”.

In comparison to the other rappers that dropped albums this week, Todd didn’t do too bad either. Young Jeezy’s The Recession, which may just be Jeezy’s worst album to date, sold about 89,000 this week, and Kardinal Offishall who had a “hot single” sold only 11,000. Though Lil Wayne and Game both did another 50k this week putting them at 2.4 million and 377,000 units respectively.

Another problem for LL is that he doesn’t have a young fanbase. No teenage girls are checking for him. His core fanbase is 35 year old single mothers who are probably going to buy his album when they get their welfare check and unfortunately that’s not this week.

  1. first of all fucc LL its not about him/he sold 44k/6k less than game and weezy. jezzy sold 90k dis week! Do da math and stop hatin. Cuz jezzy wayne game and kanye had the best albums in the the last 2 and half years! not LL. But he didnt do shit compared to dem niggaz i named. Cube and LL r old classical ass niggaz. thats the status those other hot now* niggaz tryna get to blood. On da real

  2. all i say is listen to the album. i think people get confused about how much you sell and how nice you are. LL didn’t sell much 1st week, true, but the album is straight fire. I think LL puts all that “ol school, new school” stuff to rest (for the moment). As a matter of fact, check out track 2.

true LL aint do shit in the past two years as far as albums. Probably cause he was busy getting money putting out movies. Hmmm, you do the math. (90Ksales < $10m-$15m). Besides what these guys puttin out 2nd, 3rd, 4th albums. They just got on the highway. LL’s at Exit 13, some of these dudes wouldn’t have found the on ramp if it wasn’t for him.

not saying people need to be LL fans, but a lot of respect is due. ain’t quite frankly, the man is still nice wit it. listen to the album.

  3. First of all have some common sense! LL is a real tax paying family man that is far more educated and positoned to make people not break them! Have your music taste but less not get it twisted LL never claimed to be a street THUG, pants saggin, dirty grimmy ignorant rapper!!! It takes class to do what he has done. So wayne, jay z, ect… LL has always represented himself as LL and nothing more. 20 some years in the game-who can say that?
LL has built along with a FEW other rappers DEF JAM, wh

  4. I don’t think LL blamed Def Jam. Not in the same way he did with the last album. I think he’s just now coming to grips with his position in the game. He knows he can spit as well as anyone, he’s just having a hard time translating that to his lowered popularity. It’s not the skills!

There’s a quote in the new batman movie,

“You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and all the cats that LL came up with had their careers die long ago. LL didn’t. Now he’s the villain. People hate on the album just to hate. It has very little to do with the music. LL gotta come to grips with that.

  5. Watch the movie Talk to Me, when Huey sets Petey straight at the pool hall. Whoever the idiots are that are hating on LL must see it, there is a lesson awaiting them. For people loving hip-hop, recognize this man for what he is, an Icon. You don’t have to like it, but it is so nevertheless.
So before you go off on your “f” LL tangent again. Think about how many platinum and gold records you’ve made, how many years you’ve sustained them, how long you’ve held your relationship together, how long you’ve successfully provided for your children, how many people you’ve inspired, how many thousands of kids you’ve hosted for summer camps, how much housing you’ve provided for the people that have needed help, what contributions have you made/and are you making? Ask yourself those questions dumb n*[email protected] before you go talking ish. Byetheway are you even registered to vote.

  6. LL IS THE MAN AND HE STILL PUTTIN DOWN YALL NEED TO STOP ALL THAT B.S ABOUT THAT MAN AND DUDE THAT MADE THE BAD REMARK ABOUT HIM NOT HAVING A YOUNG FAN BASE WRONG YES HE HAS YOUNG GIRLS FEELING HIM AS WELL HOW DO YOU THINK HE SAT ON 106 CHARTS BY YOUNG GIRLS VOTING HIM ON GET IT RIGHT .

  7. nuetered BG can eat a grimy dick hatin on L, im 35 & been down wit L since 85 & radio, EXIT 13 is one of his best albums ever, but he should realize his fan base is prodominantly older 30 & these young cats listenin to all this regurgitated, totally commercialized shit they call hip hop nowadays its a disgrace. hip hop today is shit, no lyrical skills, no message, NO HEART.

  8. The album completely sucks.

    It’s just that simple.
