LL Cool J Blames Exit 13 Sales on Def Jam

LL Cool J album sales exit 13
Haha @ coke fest

Where have we seen this movie before? LL Cool J’s last album, Exit 13, hit stores last week and has only since sold 44,000 copies. Yes you read that right. Now Todd is a little mad at his sales considering he thinks he is the God of hip hop and all. Here’s what he said on his myspace blog,

LL Cool J Myspace

What did Todd expect? Platinum first week? I know he posted that he thought he should do 300k in the first seven days. But what work did he do to sell 300k? Did he feature on everybody’s song? Did he put out 10 hot mixtapes? Did he put out more than one single? The first single with Dream is hot, but one hot song and self proclaiming your greatness is not going to sell albums in the year 2008. I think rappers went really delusional after Lil Wayne did his first week numbers, because they all thought “Hey I can magically do a million too”.

In comparison to the other rappers that dropped albums this week, Todd didn’t do too bad either. Young Jeezy’s The Recession, which may just be Jeezy’s worst album to date, sold about 89,000 this week, and Kardinal Offishall who had a “hot single” sold only 11,000. Though Lil Wayne and Game both did another 50k this week putting them at 2.4 million and 377,000 units respectively.

Another problem for LL is that he doesn’t have a young fanbase. No teenage girls are checking for him. His core fanbase is 35 year old single mothers who are probably going to buy his album when they get their welfare check and unfortunately that’s not this week.
