Did Big Sean’s Hall of Fame Flop?

You may say 72,000 first week sales are great in this day and age but for a major label artist I think their a sign of an artist whose music just doesn’t connect. Even J. Cole, who I pretty much despise so much I’m willing to give him another listen, sold 297,000 copies in its first week. J. Cole connects with a certain audience. Heck even Macklemore’s first week for The Heist was better scanning in 78,000 units. Keep in mind, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were independent at this point and the album has since gone platinum and with their singles have sold 10 million copies. Again Macklemore connects with a certain audience. And yeah Big Sean isn’t going platinum with this album.

So what’s with Big Sean? I think being a protege of Kanye and the most visible member of G.O.O.D. Music, Kanye fans like myself just can’t get into Big Sean’s music. I honestly tried to listen to Hall of Fame, I like the artwork and what he’s been coming with lately, but this album just doesn’t connect with me. I asked on twitter what was the best songs on this album and someone mentioned “You Don’t Know”. While the production on their is pretty awesome, Big Sean’s raps are terrible. I can only imagine what that song would sound like in more capable hands say Kanye or even Drake.

Big Sean’s going around on his publicity run like he’s some socially conscious rapper because of a line on “First Chain” that goes something like, “Police only work 12-hour shifts, cause in Detroit that’s cheaper than the bailout, bitch”. Huh? Only 12 hour shifts? Are they supposed to work 24 hour shifts? I don’t get it. I wouldn’t want tired ass police working these crazy ass shifts, they’d probably mess up even more. But this line is just indicitive of Big Sean not really thinking his lyrics through in the same way that we expect great rappers to do. I’m sure he’ll say something like, “Oh I’m still growing”. But c’mon man! You’re a waste of resources, go back to the mixtape circuit and hone your craft.
